Simala:Spiritual Journey of Nhagzventures

I wrote this article for us to remind that October is Month of the Most Holy Rosary.

It was a sunny morning on the 30th of July when my childhood friend decided to visit Simala since she hasn’t been yet to the said Miraculous Virgin Mary of Cebu.

Leaving Cebu City Early in the morning

She always heard of stories of miracles told about this particular church in Brgy. Simala, which I’m already aware of since I was able to visit there a year ago. Aside from its striking castle-like structure, local folks and the monks of Simala Church claimed that they witnessed several wonders and one of the miracles that they often witnessed is the crying of the statue of Virgin Mary.

The Pilgrimage

The immediate thing that any guest would appreciate about Simala is its magnificent architecture. The church, in its castle-like structure boldly perches itself on a hill in perfect accent to the blue sky. Long steps of staircase wind, revealing a large statue of Mother Mary when you look farther ahead. As though symbolizing the spiritual journey that one takes to finally be standing before the Omnipotent God in His altar, I climbed the steps until I reached the entrance of the church.

Since then, hundreds of pilgrims travel to Sibonga and visit the Simala Church. In the past decade, the church was very small but because of non-stop flow of donation by  many pilgrims and by commercializing the Church, its structure changed to a very elegant and beautiful church on the mountainous Sibonga.

Being there is simply rejuvenating. We were even in luck for when we got there we’ve had a chance to attend the monthly regular mass. (*devotees come in truckloads to be there every 13th of the month to hear Mass at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or during the weekends at 3 p.m.)

Strolling Around the Miraculous Church

How to go to Simala Church?

Getting there is you have to be in Cebu City then go to South Bus Terminal and ride a Ceres Bus going to Sibonga.  It’s easy to find the Church because the Bus driver will inform the passengers once you get there. It’s a 2 hour and a half hour ride from Cebu, by the time you reach the stop point for the Church you will take a  motorcycle ride to bring you to the Sanctuary.

The Memorare, printed below, invites us to ask the Blessed Mother for her assistance and her grace, especially when we feel most troubled in our daily lives.

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
