Mt. Lanaya in Alegria, Cebu:Trek With A Cause

Aside from its peaceful environment, fine beaches and mesmerizing waterfalls of Alegria, Cebu.Who could’ve  thought that there is such mountain define by knife-edges slope facing the west. My third visit to the town of Alegria, Cebu was such an exciting an inspiring twist, a day hike traverse and tree planting ! Our route to its summit was through Legaspi trail. The angle of ascent throughout the trail averages 50-60°.

FB_IMG_1493271297877[1]Mt.Lanaya is a hundred meters away from the town proper of Alegria. Towering around 700 masl, Mt. Lanaya stands almost at a stark contrast to the surrounding mountain ranges near it.

We started our trek via Legaspi trail and it is covered with loose stone, soil, and rocks which makes a climber slide down more often when not assisted but successful climbing without the aid of ropes is possible.

Fortunately, the majority of the trail features landscape for secure footing, although it is still unforgiving in its steepness. Only one climber at a time can climb through the huge rock safely, as behind the rock face a steep drop-off exists.

Those who are keen on witnessing the picturesqueness view of Alegria during sunrise may opt to spend two nights in the mountains, however, that will entail more planning and a bigger pack on your back.

Personally, I prefer extended day hikes (hikes that take more than 5 hours). I find it more enjoyable because you can focus on the scenery without lugging a heavy pack on your back and have more time for side trips once you get down.

Ram here!

For this adventure, I was happily met the group of travelers from Destination Dream lead by Ram.

We started our hike at around 10 am . We started  a nice warm-up for the long hike. The terrain was even and how I wished it was the same the entire way.   We passed a section with huge trees and forest-covered on both sides and for a while, I forgot how grueling the next few hours would be.

After the challenging trail of the first camp we had our lunch at Kalo-kalo Peak. It’s not technical, just a very long steep trail with some pine needles scattered on the ground which made it slippery.

At this point, my companions were around 20-30 minutes ahead of me but the trail was easy to spot so I didn’t mind the solitude. It also enabled me to take photos of trees, although I couldn’t take as much as I wanted because it started drizzling and stopping for a break made the cold unbearable.

Emerging from the mossy forest, I was welcomed by chilly winds and light drizzle, making my trek to the saddle camp, very cold. I ran into another cheery group and it felt nice to see their warm smiles as I began to feel miserably cold. After a few more steps, I stopped and marveled at some beautiful view on the top.

After a good 30 minutes or so of assault, climbers we finally break through the summit clearing and move on towards Kalo-kalo Peak. The stone structure is dotted with plants, and climbers must take care in scrambling up the rock because there is limited space. For a 700-meter mountain, the view from the top is extremely rewarding. During clear mornings, try to look for a hint of your shadow cast onto the expansive Tañon Strait.

Disclaimer:  We are not able to jaunt the mesmerizing Cancalanog falls because the group enjoyed swimming at the beautiful Cambais Falls .

Heres the full video on how we enjoyed the trail and conquered the summit of Mt.Lanaya.

I would like to thank Destination Dream especially Ram for the warm welcome of the group. It was a pleasure adventuring with you guys! Looking forward to more travels and adventures.
