As we all know that Ormoc City is really mountainous and could serve as one of the best natural destinations/attractions in the country. Aside from the attractions that are mostly for brave and adventurous person, here is another attraction that will make you fall in love to visit Ormoc,
After conquering the Highest Peak in the whole Region 8 which is the Alto Peak also known as Mt. Ameduin. Brgy. Cabintan, Ormoc City brought another astonishing place to my adventurous spirit, The Vege Farm.
This upland barangay in Ormoc City played a big role in the country. Brgy. Cabintan is now considered as the vegetable bowl of Eastern Visayas as it is the major supplier of vegetables not just region 8 but also in Cebu City markets and malls.
The barangay also houses the Cabintan Livelihood Community Association. This farmers association in the barangay is a recipient of various projects conducted from the Government and Non-Government agencies whose goals are to help the vegetables production and market linkages.
As we all know that sustainable vegetable production is a challenge of every farmer especially when there are natural calamities. But It was really surprising that this uplan Barangay are no stranger to calamities after they experienced loss of livelihood when typhoon Yolanda came.
According to the locals, the losses were not only in production but also soil fertitlity, which causes to the low market value of products.
Cabintan and the adjacent highland barangays supply fresh vegetables to the city and the neighboring towns on a daily basis. Major crops include cabbage, sweet pepper, and scallion (sibuyas dahon). Other high value crops include green beans (Baguio beans), lettuce, and broccoli, among others. While rice and corn production is significant, they are mostly for local consumption.
“Fruit and vegetables have long been touted for their health benefits. In the Philippines the virtues of horticulture now include the ability to lift rural communities out of poverty”
The discovery of agriculture was the first big step toward a civilized life.
A great thanks to Mr. Pocholo Franco, the VP of Ormoc City Tourism Council. Ormoc City Tours by Fran-con Viaje International , Supercat by 2Go Travel , Cabintan Local Eco Guide especially to the Morales Brothers and family.
