Pick It Up and Clean It Up: The Annual National Mountain Clean-Up Day

nash (1)

As a traveler, camper, and trekker, I always believe that trekking won’t be complete without the cost of love and respect for the mountain environment. I want to inspire people and share to them about that keeping our mountains clean is of supreme importance.

Mountains are friends to all. They are not just soil, forest, birds, and animals. They provide us with the most essential things in life. I also agree that mountains are also generous sources of recreation, pleasure, and delight. The joy of watching the sunrise and sunset with your fellow trekkers.

nagz1 (1).jpeg

Adventurose and Social Climber @ the Summit of Mt.Lanaya

However, many people seem to have taken them for granted. It is disheartening to see a dump of garbage on the trail and slopes.  Most of us don’t know the proper system to handle the garbage, especially in mountain villages. Putting them in dustbins is not enough. Burning them or throwing it into the streams is not a good practice. If we are not bringing back our non-biodegradable things-plastic bottles, wrappers, foils, etc back to cities, we are littering the mountains.

nagzz (1).jpeg

I don’t expect that city-dwellers to come and clean all the mess in mountains. But I do expect them to not litter. That alone can be a good example in cleaning up of the mountains.

From the day that I’ve entered the blogosphere and learned to appreciate the beauty of the world, I always wanted to join any activities that have something to do with environmental awareness.

Last July 8-9, 2017 was the 4th National Mountain Clean-Up Day. It is an annual activity initiated by Pinoy Mountaineer to clean up the mountains and to remind the importance of having a clean mountain environment.   An activity that gives a great opportunity that I am longing for.  Lucky me, I am surrounded by friends with the same interests as me. We have a group called, Tribu Hugawan. A small group who would like to see beautiful things around the world through wandering. These are the people who want to inspire people that it is very important to get to know and respect our planet.

These are the awesome people of Tribu Hugawan, from left Tboy, me, Lovely and Belle. We are actually missing one creature. 🙂

So these friends of mine decided to participate in such annual activity with Laagan Pilipinas at Ablayan Peak, Boljoon Cebu. As we meet the group in the particular area, we began to felt awkward. Thus, we manifested the trails of Mt. Lanaya in Alegria, Cebu.

IMG_1479 (1).jpeg

Upon arrival at Alegria, Cebu, we prepared our trash bag that is tied around the hands. At the trail, all the non-biodegradable waste that we saw along the trail goes into the trash bag. We picked the litter from the trail and keep it in our trash bags until we reached the campsite of the mountain.

summit (1).jpeg

Before proceeding to the peak of Mt.Lanaya, we bring the garbage down and take it to a nearby house who collects garbage where there is a proper system to manage the garbage.

tr (1).jpeg

trs (1).jpeg

I understand that there are some trekkers feel that it is very difficult to be committed to picking up litter in a day especially when they are struggling to climb. Yes, I completely understand that! It is difficult to pick things up on the trail.

trail (1).jpeg

After taking the garbage down to the house, we then proceeded to the assault of Mt.Lanaya. Meanwhile, the ascending trails of the assault going to the summit of Mt.Lanaya were quite clean which gives us the best time to explore the area. It was truly fulfilling that you have already explored your beautiful surroundings while helping it to make the mountain environment clean.

I’ve been to many cleanup drives but this was my first time to join the National Mountain Clean-Up.

After cleaning the site, we proceeded to a place where it will bring us a perfect nostalgia. And since we feel tired and hungry of our explorations, so we decided to jaunt Cangkalanog Falls to give some sort of shake.

falls2 (1).jpeg

Just by looking at it will bring you an instant nostalgia. It is a complete mixture of Kawasan Falls in Badian and Enchanted River in Surigao. A scenic bluish-green color of the water will make you jump and shout for joy.

falls (1).jpeg

No one will do the same thing at their own house. I think the fundamental reason is the lack of responsibility towards Mother Nature. They feel a sense of duty when it comes to keeping their house clean, but they don’t feel the same towards nature.

So, there is an immediate need to make the trekkers feel responsible by telling them the consequences of their actions. Our Green Trails goal can only be achieved if trekkers feel responsible towards the mountains.

“Keeping the mountains ‘clean’ is not just our duty, but a necessity”

Ubeertime Comedy +Music +KTV is one of the several comedy bars in Cebu City. The place is not too big but surely you will enjoy your visit due to the reason of their Happiness Ubeerload where you can sing with their prof-sound karaoke system. When I arrived, I noticed right away the attractive lights on the entrance. And a signage that will welcome you from outside.

8 Reasons Why You Should Stay at Costabella Tropical Beach Resort

This year, I  had the pleasure to visit several attractions both inside and outside Cebu, experience several different cultures. On the  run, I had the chance to experience and see  the enchanting and traditional hotel in Cebu, the Costabella Tropical Beach Resort. Together with the fellow Cebu  Bloggers  and  other media groups.

I’ve been  to many luxury resorts in Mactan island, Cebu but this one has the perfect setting to admire Mactan’s enchanting coastline.

Matching Costabella Resort’s wonderful atmosphere is the establishment’s incredible furniture, naturally. Most would know that Spanish culture revolves around nature… this is the reason why you will find wooden elements and flowers around the area. This helps bring the beauty of nature inside.

You will also notice that the has more of a minimalist design, veering away from huge and heavy ornaments normally found in other hotels. These little things help to avoid overwhelming guests during their stay. I absolutely love how clean, uncluttered and simple the entire hotel is.

4. Architecture of the Hotel

From the outside, structures that seem to resemble gold bars and majestically glitter especially when hit by the rays of the sun. But inside, Costabella Resort is anything but typical. Its wooden paneling and nature-inspired hallways evoke feelings of tranquility and peacefulness.

5.  Cozy  and Relaxing Rooms

Costabella Tropical Beach Resort  is perhaps one of very few hotels anywhere that boasts of rooms that are truly unforgettable, not just because of its beauty and elegance, but because of how the design of the place immediately puts you at ease.

Its tastefully appointed rooms, all 156 of them, beautifully integrate Spanish colonial influences with natural, homegrown materials. Carved woodwork, local art pieces and charming pocket gardens are the hallmark of this timeless place. Many of the guest rooms come with private balconies that offer a breathtaking view that is both peaceful and romantic.

Observance Of Silence On Good Friday- One Filipino Tradition

In Philippine rural areas, people are encouraged to turn off their radios and televisions on Good Friday that marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. Through this complete silence, it is believed that people will be able to communicate with God through devotional prayer.

A day before the death of Jesus Christ which is the Holy Thursday. Devotees will commemorate Jesus Last Supper through the  Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper. Also, the priest will performs the washing of the feet ritual with 12 people like what Jesus did with his disciples. After the Mass, the altar will be stripped bare and the church bell will not be rung until the Easter vigil.

The Blessed sacrament will be repositioned at the Altar of Repose where the hosts consecrated during the Mass of the Lord’s Last Supper  are placed.

After hearing the Mass, churchgoers can pray these reposed during the Visita Iglesia . A Filipino Lenten tradition where people can visit  seven or fourteen churches to pray before the Blessed Sacrament during Maundy Thursday.

7 Churches In Cebu That You Can Visit For Visita Iglesia (7 Churches Visitation )

photo from cbcpnews.com

When I was a kid, I am very active to attend this such activity in our community or even until now. I can still remember the beliefs of my ancestors that completing the 7 churches or sometimes fourteen would grant our wishes.

This visitation will be done after the mass of the Lord’s Supper and travel to nearby churches to pray before the blessed Sacrament.

In Cebu City, we are so lucky to have these churches that are very close to each other to make our visitation easier. And here are the 7 churches that you can visit if you wish to do the Visita Iglesia.

Basilica Minore Del Sto. Nino

The Minor Basilica of the Holy child Jesus also know as Basilica Minore Del Sto Niño is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. The church was built by Fray Andres de Urdaneta and Diego de Hererra, both Augustinian friars in 1565. The church was completed from 1739-1740 and was named by the Holy See as ” The Mother of all Churches in the Philippines”.

Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Angels and of St. Vitales also known as Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. It is the ecclesiastical seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cebu .The church was designed like a typical Spanish colonial church, namely, squat and with thick walls to withstand typhoons and other natural calamities.

The construction of the church took many years due to lack of funds and other unexpected incidents.

The church is the center of devotion to our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the South part of Cebu. The church was originally named as Our Lady of Immaculate Concepcion. Because of this devotion, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel became the patroness of the parish when it was erected in 1971.

The foundation of the church was early as June 1621 when Recollects set foot in Cebu.

This church is also the center of devotion to Saint Joseph, Protector of the Order and Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr.

The Mabolo church also know as St. Joseph the Patriarch Parish was built-in 1866. The church was designed with its classical Gothic architecture with one beautiful bell tower. The church has been damaged by many natural disasters.

Despite of the natural calamities that causes the renovation of the church, the conservation of the original designs are still intact. The aged coral stones, the thick iron grilled windows, solid marble floor and the solid wooden doors are still intact.

San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church

Established in 1584, years ahead the establishment of the Cebu Diocese in 1595. San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish is one of the oldest church in the Philippines. The church was considered as the original site of the landing of Legazpi’s expedition on April 27,1565 and became the embryo of a settlement, which Legazpi established and named San Miguel.

The church suffered great destruction and damage on account of a storm in October 15, 1912 and an earthquake in February 29, 1922.

Things To Ponder

“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help enrich others by our own poverty.”

Wet and Wild World of River Trekking In Catmon, Cebu PH

River trekking is relative to canyoning, that was established as a kind of sports in parts of the world. Relatively, this kind of sports is somehow new in the Philippines. And who could have thought that this kind of sports can be found in the northern part of Cebu.

Image may contain: one or more people, grass, child, mountain, sky, sunglasses, outdoor and natureAfter my waterscaping in some of the magnificent waterfalls in Southern Cebu, my adventurous soul led me to the wild terrain of Brgy. Tabili Catmon, Cebu. Since, none of my colleagues showed some interest in joining the adventure so I decided to post in on Facebook. Fortunately, my weekend recharge did not end up in a solo excursion. Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, people standing, tree, child, outdoor and natureIt is my first time to do a river trekking so I am a little bit nervous. I have done Canyoning before so I believed that I can do this again. I was expecting that we will be climbing high mountains before getting to the falls, but yay! there was none. It is just a minor trek.

Image may contain: 1 person, tree, child, grass, outdoor and nature

We’re getting ready to Trek!

Image may contain: one or more people, sky, grass, tree, child, outdoor and natureThe road entrance of Eskina Katambisan, Bag-o Catmon is the way that led us to Barangay Tabili, which is the jump off point for this trekking activity. This is my second time in the town but I’ve never been this part of Catmon so I don’t know how the terrain looks like.

A few minutes of walking before getting to the first waterfall on where to start the river trek is just like a walk in the park then the trail becomes a little bit of physically suffering.

As we did down-streaming, there are several mesmerizing cascades along the trail. We need to scramble the huge boulders and have to grasp whatever object we can to avoid getting off balance.

Image may contain: 2 people, child, outdoor, nature and waterAside from river trekking, traversing to Sagay Peak for a sunset viewing is part of the activity. However, it was aborted because of the time since we are having so much fun dipping into the falls

River trekking in Tinubdan falls is one of the adventures that I would love to do for quite some time and finally I can now say I survived!

Image may contain: one or more people, mountain, outdoor, nature and water

River Trekking is a bit of a challenge and mostly you should need a gear or bring your own gear. But no worries, river trekking in Tinubdan Falls is not that technical but to make sure we are always safe we need to have a guide master.

It is advisable to engage someone or hired a tour guide upon trekking because according to our guide during the activity. He personally experienced some mysterious happenings in the place.

Even as paychecks rise, more and more people are becoming “stressed out and they realize they need the weekend to recharge” through adventure or physical activity.

Must try baby back ribs in BBQ Sauce

“We use sweet paprika in our French fries. Walang paprica sa Philippines, kaya we import it (There is no paprika in the Philppines so we import it.) The result is, iba ang lasa ng sa amin (fries) kumpara sa iba (Our fries have a distinctive taste),’’ said Aubrey.
